Are There Natural Ingredients in Personal Care Products?

Jane from Vermont Writes:

I keep seeing news about toxic chemicals in our personal care products. I am 52 and use many cosmetics to keep my skin as healthy as possible. What should I be looking for in using the right kind of products on my skin?

Dear Jane,

The market is flooded with all kinds of anti-aging and anti-wrinkle solutions and promises. I always encourage people to read the labels and understand the ingredients. A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t pronounce it, you probably shouldn’t be putting it on your skin. But many say, “It’s on my skin, I’m not eating it!” Well, not so fast. Our skin is the largest organ of our body. Research now tells us that when it comes to aging and disease that seventy-five percent of what we put on our skin goes directly into our bloodstream. Wow! So when we are putting creams, lotions, and potions, on our skin, just know that is directly going into your body as well.

The environmental working group (ewg.org) has listed over 200 potential carcinogens in our cosmetics today.  Many companies are adding natural ingredients to their personal care products from deodorants, shampoos, toothpastes, lotions, and beauty products. It is important to learn what many of these chemicals actually are and what they can do to the body. Many can disrupt our hormones and cause us to have metabolic challenges when it comes to losing weight or having better energy levels.

Here are some basic ingredients to look for in your current line of products at home.

1.Gluten-Free Oatmeal
Many times is used as a skin cleanser and can be safer than using soap.

2.Baking Soda
Great as a bath soak, shampoo, and facial scrubbing agent, great for empowering your health.

3.Pineapple
Because of the bromelain enzyme is great for replenishing tired feet and softening rough patches on the skin.

4.Raw Honey
Is used as a great hair conditioner and rinses out quite easily.

5.Olive Oil
It’s great for your typical manicures and pedicures. It keeps the skin healthy and the nails strong.

6.Green Tea
Great as a skin toner and for overall skin health protection. This is one of my personal favorites.

These are some of my favorite methods in helping your body improve its health and appearance. There are toxins in our personal care products that we need to be concerned about. It's all about learning to make better choices.
